What to expect

How it works

The browser decodes the file into visible pixels, draws those pixels onto a blank canvas of the same dimensions, and exports a fresh image. JPEG and WebP use the selected quality; PNG uses its lossless encoder. The original metadata blocks are never copied into that canvas export.

Limits and edge cases

  • Pixel re-encoding is not a forensic certification. Verify exported files independently before a high-sensitivity disclosure, especially when uncommon formats or browser implementations are involved.
  • Animation, embedded color profiles, thumbnails, and all other non-pixel data are intentionally discarded, while lossy JPEG or WebP output may alter pixel values slightly.
