How to compress an image to under 100 KB

Job portals, visa applications, and upload forms often reject photos over 100 KB. The fix takes under a minute: compress the image with a quality slider and watch the file size until it drops below the limit.

Step by step

  1. Open the image compressor. Start the free image compressor — no account needed.
  2. Add your image. Drop in the JPG, PNG, or WebP you need to shrink.
  3. Lower the quality slider. Reduce quality gradually; the live size readout shows the result after each change.
  4. Check the size readout. Stop once the output shows less than 100 KB. Most photos get there around 60–75% quality.
  5. Download the compressed file. Save the result and upload it to the form that rejected the original.

Tips that save a second try

  • If quality alone can't reach 100 KB, resize the image to smaller dimensions first — a 4000px photo has far more data than a form ever needs.
  • JPG and WebP compress photos much harder than PNG; PNG is only worth keeping for screenshots and graphics with text.
  • Keep the original file — compress a copy, so you can redo it if a portal wants a different limit.

Common questions

Why do upload forms reject images over 100 KB?

Many government and job portals cap file sizes to keep their storage and review systems fast. The limit is about file size, not image quality — a well-compressed photo passes and still looks fine.

Will compressing to 100 KB make my photo blurry?

Usually no. Photos straight from a phone carry far more data than a form needs, so there is a lot of room to shrink before quality visibly drops. Combine mild quality reduction with a smaller resolution for the best result.
